Sheltered anchorage is available on the west side of the spit. There are wharf and landing floats for small craft. Ashore there are camping and picnicking facilities, including a group area, water handpump, play areas and walking trails. There is passenger ferry service from Sidney in the summer.

Located on the southern peninsula of Cortes Island, the park is named for the capelin fish that spawn ashore by the tens of thousands. Females lay up to 65,000 eggs on the shore in late September and early October, which hatch in 2 to 3 weeks. These small silver-green, sardine-sized fish draw a variety of other marine life to the area, including salmon, seals, sea lions, seabirds and otters. Gulls, Bald eagles, cormorants, herons and oystercatchers can also be seen here. Smelt Bay is the only provincial campground on remote Cortes Island, offering 22 spacious campsites laid out in a wonderful setting in the woods overlooking Smelt Bay. Saltwater fishing for salmon and rock fish can be good at this park.

Smuggler Cove is a small, picturesque all-weather anchorage on the south side of Sechelt Peninsula near Secret Cove. To access this park by land, visitors can hike 4 km from a parking lot off Hwy 101. This park provides camping, hiking, swimming, kayaking and picnicking. Camping is permitted only in the 5 designated sites located in the basin of Smuggler Cove Proper (in the Cove). This is approximately 1 kilometre from the vehicle parking area. The sites are individual and gravel. There is one pit toilet.
